Elpis (Ἔλπις) is an ancient Greek word meaning "hope." In Greek mythology, Elpis is also the personification of hope, often depicted as a young woman. She was one of the spirits that emerged from Pandora's jar (often referred to as Pandora's box) after all the evils had escaped. According to the myth, while all the other troubles were released into the world, hope remained inside the jar, providing humanity with something to hold onto in times of despair.
In a broader philosophical context, Elpis represents optimism, expectation, and the belief in a positive future, despite challenges or suffering. It has a symbolic association with the human capacity to look for the good, even in difficult circumstances.
